Team Comments (strengths, weaknesses)
“Overall, we should
be a solid dual meet team and top 5 tournament team. Our schedule is one
of the toughest in the state. We have two state placers back and two
state qualifiers, yet we have young and inexperience wrestlers in some
weight classes, but newcomers have been very successful at the Middle
school, JV level and have filled in at the varsity last year and won
matches. The two State Placers back are: Timmy Miller and Jeff Gasser;
State Qualifiers Josh Kallai and Jordan Bryson. We have 7 District
Qualifiers back. Also the coaching staff has been intact for the last
12 years. This should guarantee a fun and exciting season.
“The Suburban League
should continue to improve after a strong showing from Wadsworth,
Highland, and Green at the State Tournament. Individually, there is some
outstanding talent.
The area is loaded
again with premier individuals and teams in all Divisions. Walsh ,
Perry, and St. V's should stand above the rest.

2004-2005
Wrestlers prepare for
13th straight SLT
NEWS RELEASE NOVEMBER
1, 2004
What an exciting finish to the
2003-04 season. The Grizzly wrestlers finally earned a Banner after
over 50 year drought along with a #21 National ranking in the Amateur
Wrestling News Prep Top 40 poll. They finished 16-2 in dual matches,
qualified six individuals and placed four, finishing fourth overall at
the State Tournament. Individually, Adam Melton and Timmy Miller
wrestled in the State Championship match, both losing hard fought 4-3
and 5-0 decisions respectively while Luke Busson finished 4th and
Jeff Gasser finished 6th. For the 11th year in a row, Wadsworth
wrestling has produced a finalist or two, vying for an individual State
Championship.
Miller and Gasser are back along
with a two state qualifiers Jordan Bryson and Josh Kallai. Now coaches
and the rest of the 2004-05 team are ready to begin their quest to 13
peat and continue the dominance in the Suburban League, as well as, take
a more than six to the State Tournament in the 16,000 seat Schottenstein
Center in Columbus.
After completing one of the
toughest schedules in team history and winning its 12 consecutive
Suburban League championships and placing 10 out of top 12 finishes at
the State Tournament, area teams may wonder if the Grizzlies will have
anything left in the year 2004. The 2004-05 season will soon test
the Grizzlies who have worked hard in the off season, trying to earn
the privilege to carry on the great tradition set by past teams.
This year's Grizzlies will try to
fend off perennial power Highland and Green . Last year the Grizzlies
did not lose a dual meet in the League and also won the League
Tournament and its 12th consecutive title posting 4 champions while 2
return : Jeff Gasser and Timmy Miller
The nucleus of the 2004-05 team has
worked extremely hard in the off-season, with individual wrestlers
posting more than 200 total hours of lifting weight, wrestling at open
mats on Thursday night, and attending summer camps especially the West
Virginia team camp, and competing nationally, finishing 8th at the
Disney Duals in Florida and competing at Cadet and Junior National
Tournaments in Fargo, North Dakota.
The 2004 team is led by
Seniors: Ryan Ball, Brendan Buzzelli, Thad Cunningham, Jeff
Gasser, Josh Kallai, Jason Kelty, Travis Lyon, and Timmy Miller ;
Juniors: Brandon Arvay, Kurtis Brown, Jordan Bryson, Kyle
Blake,Corey Cavanaugh, Dave Crowley, Brett Hammel, Cole Loguidice, Eric
Kresowaty, Jeff Rager, and Matt Wenger; Sophomores: Nate Budney,
Josh Campbell, Ryan Capps, Josh Collins, Matt Kelty, Nick Kuster, Bryan
Lamp, Kenny Owens, Shane Radabaugh, Avery Ralston, Dan Robinson, and
Matt Snodgrass. Coaches: Head Coach John Gramuglia, Assistants:
Chris Kallai, Bobby Jones, and Larry Kaufman, Volunteers: Mike Kallai,
Pete Chakonas, Jason Friedt, Kip Shipley, and Todd Winter. Team
Strength Coach: Don Srock, Team Doctor: Dr. Papas
The future looks promising with
another strong 9th grade team. They are determined group with a good
deal of potential. In fact, some freshmen will see varsity action.
Incidentally, this is the ninth 9th grade class with Youth League
experience at Firestone High School, and the coaches have indeed noticed
the difference.
Over 60 enthusiastic 7th and 8th
graders have turned out for the Central Middle School. They are coached
by Bill Talcott and assistant coach Matt Shiarla. Both coaches
continue to do a great job molding and developing young talent that feed
the high school. They have won several tournaments over the past years
and have developed a winning attitude and a very strong work ethic.
Our Youth Program has over 100
members and a strong coaching nucleus of Mike Wegner and Todd
Baughman. Kathy Wegner is our treasurer and will help organize and
develop the inner workings of the program. The overall program has
grown rapidly with over 100 plus participants for only 15th year in the
Firestone League. Last year they finished 1st in their Division and 2nd
in the State tournament qualified thirteen to the Youth State
Tournament. In addition, they placed six individuals: State
Runner-up: Aarick Jones,
3rd Placers:
Dustin Grier, Kagan Squire, Matt Meuer, Caleb Busson, Bart Randolph,
5th Placers:Matt Bouman, Josh Otanicar,
6th Placer: Clay Wenger
The entire family of
coaches are working hard in order to dominate the Suburban League and
this area. It is also our goal to continue the tradition of placing
wrestlers at the State Tournament and winning another ultimate wrestling
honor, a State Championship.
