Team Comments (strengths, weaknesses)

“Overall, we should be a solid dual meet team and top 3 tournament team.  We have the most state placers back in team history(3), yet still have young and inexperience wrestlers in some  weight classes,  but  newcomers have been very successful at the  Middle school, JV level and have filled in at the varsity last year and won matches.  We have 3 State Placers back: Adam Melton, Timmy Miller, and Luke Busson and State Qualifier Josh McInturff. We have a unique group of 9 seniors who care a lot about wrestling and have strong moral character.  This should guarantee a fun and enjoyable season.  We have 8 District Qualifiers back.  Also the coaching staff has been intact for the last 11 years. ”

Suburban League

“The Suburban League should continue to improve after a strong showing from Wadsworth, Highland, and Green at the State Tournament. Individually, there are some outstanding talent.

Area Lookout

Wrestlers prepare for 12th straight SLT

NEWS RELEASE  NOVEMBER 1, 2003

For the 10th year in a row, Wadsworth wrestling has produced a finalist vying for an  individual State Championship. Adam Melton kept the elite tradition alive by defeating his Perry opponent 6-4 in double overtime during the State semifinal match last March. He went on to lose a heartbreaker in the finals.

Melton is back, along with a contingent of several placers and  state qualifiers. Now coaches and the rest of the 2003-04 team are ready to begin their quest to 12 peat and continue the dominance in the Suburban League, as well as, take a more than six to the State Tournament in the 16,000 seat Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

After completing one of the toughest schedules in team history and winning its 11 consecutive Suburban League championships and placing  9 out of  top 11 finishes at the State Tournament, area teams may wonder if the Grizzlies will have anything left  in the year 2003.  The  2003-04 season  will soon test the Grizzlies who have worked hard in the off season  trying to earn the privilege to carry on the great tradition  set by  past  teams.

Last year’s 13-1 team qualified six individuals and placed four, finishing fifth overall at the State Tournament.  They included:  Adam Melton (145 State Runner-up), Timmy Miller (152 3rd Place), Luke Busson (215 3rd Place), and Donnie Srock (160 6th Place).

This year’s Grizzlies will try to fend off perennial power Highland and Green . Last year the Grizzlies did not lose a dual meet in the League and also won the League Tournament and its 11th consecutive title, posting 9 champions while 6 return :  Jeff Gasser, Jeremy Noble, Josh Kallai,  Adam Melton, Timmy Miller, and Josh McInturff.    They are all working hard to repeat, and help other Grizzlies become champs, keep the SLT, and take a contingent of wrestlers to the State Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

The nucleus of the 2003-04 team has worked extremely hard in the off-season, with individual wrestlers posting more than 200 total hours of lifting weight, wrestling at open mats on Thursday night, and attending summer camps especially the Ohio State team camp and wrestling at the Disney Duals in Florida and Cadet and Junior National Tournaments in Fargo, North Dakota.

The 2003 team is led by Seniors: Tim Budney, Luke Busson, Luke Ellebruch, Sean Gramuglia, Josh McInturff, Adam Melton, Jeremy Noble, John Singleton, and Tyler Tucker. Juniors: Ryan Ball, Cameron Cornelius, Thad Cunningham,  Jeff Gasser, Josh Kallai, Jason Kelty, Adam Kresowaty, Andrew Lang, , Travis Lyon, Timmy Miller, Tyler Noble, and Adam Smith; Sophomores:. Brandon Arvay, Kurtis Brown, Jordan Bryson, Corey Cavanaugh, Dave Crowley, Trevor Day,  Brett Hammel, Ben Hoover, Eric Kresowaty, Cole Loguidice, Tim Neal, Jeff Rager, Nate Reed, Jeff Smith, and Matt Wenger. Coaches: Head Coach John Gramuglia, Assistants: Mike Kallai, Chris Kallai  and Larry Kaufman, Volunteers: Bill Robertson, Kip Shipley, Don Srock, and Todd Winter. Team Doctor: Dr. Papas

The future looks promising with another strong 9th grade team.  They are determined group with a good deal of potential.  In fact, some freshmen will see varsity action.  Incidentally, this is the eighth 9th grade class with Youth League experience at Firestone High School, and the coaches have indeed noticed the difference.

Over 50 enthusiastic 7th and 8th graders have turned out for the Central Middle School.  They are coached by Bill Talcott and assistant coach Matt Shiarla. Both coaches continue to do a great job molding and developing young talent that feed the high school.  They have won several tournaments over the past years and have developed a winning attitude and a very strong work ethic.

Our Youth Program has over 100 members and a strong coaching nucleus of Mike Wegner and Bart Randolph.  Kathy Wegner is our treasurer and will help organize and develop the inner workings of the program.  The overall program has grown rapidly with over 100 plus participants for only 13th year in the Firestone League.  Last year they finished 1st in their Division and qualified several to the Youth State Tournament. In addition, they also placed six individuals: State Champion: Brad Squire, 2nd Dan Foore, 4th Kagan Squire, 5th Aairck Jones and 5th Marc Snodgrass

The entire family of coaches are working hard in order to dominate the Suburban League and this area.  It is also our goal to continue the tradition of placing wrestlers at the State Tournament and winning another ultimate wrestling honor, a State Championship.
